CRICKET IN USA

One half of the oldest international rivalry in the world, the United States of America boasts a long relationship with England’s national sport. The first ever international match in all of sports was held in Manhattan in 1844 between the United States of America and Canada in front of 10,000 fans.

Mention of cricket goes back in American history to the early 1700s, and it survived the Revolutionary War, gradually increasing in popularity until it was slowed by the Civil War in the 1860s. The nation shifted preference to baseball, but cricket experienced a brief revival in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Bart King emerged from the famous Philadelphians to become “America’s Cricketing son,” and dominated First Class cricket while pioneering swing bowling.

Cricket's popularity tapered during the first World War, and USA wouldn’t play Canada again for 51 years before resuming the Auty Cup in 1963. In 1965, USA would be recognised by the ICC as an Associate Member with USACA as the governing body. Peaks and valleys and controversy would follow, but recent years have seen the Americans, reborn as USA Cricket in 2017, surge into ODI status two years later.

The rapid growth of the game in the USA over the past 20 years can be attributed to the increase in the South Asian expat population. USA Cricket have recently gone into a partnership with Willow TV and Times of India to develop a professional major and minor league T20 franchise system.
